Word problem - find the number

9/8/2013

Six times the difference of twice a number and 10 yields the number increased by 28.  What is the number?

x = the number

6(2x - 10) = x + 28   {six times the difference of twice the number and 10 equals the number plus 28}
12x - 60 = x + 28   {used distributive property}
11x - 60 = 28   {subtracted x from each side}
11x = 88   {added 60 to each side}
x = 8   {divided each side by 11}

the number is 8
