A "find the number" word problem

1/24/2019

Six less than three times a number is four more than twice the number.  Find the number.
A.)  44
B.)  2
C.)  1
D.)  10

x = the number

Put the words into numbers and variables:

"six less than three times a number"   →  3x - 6
"is"   →   =
"four more than twice the number"  →   2x + 4

3x - 6 = 2x + 4   {created the equation by putting the words into numbers and variables}
x = 10  {added 6 and subtracted 2x from each side}

Check by putting 10 back in for the number in the words:
"six less than three times 10"   →  24
is   → =
four more than twice 10   →  24

24 = 24

D.)  10
