What to do when the the variables disappear when trying to solve a system of equations using substitution?
When solving a system of equations and the variables disappear…..don’t panic.
It is one of two situations: If the variables disappear and you are left with a true statement, such as 3 = 3 or -6 = -6, then there are infinite solutions, which means the two lines intersect in an infinite number of points. In other words, the two lines are the same. If the variables disappear and you are left with a false statement, such as 4 = 7 or -2 = 6, then there is no solution, which means the two lines have no point of intersection.
