Sylvia works at a car wash. She earns $50 per day and $12 per car washed. Sylvia wants to earn $158 in 1 day. What represents the number of cars Sylvia must wash to reach her goal?

x = number of cars washed

12x + 50 = 158   {she earns $12 for each car + $50 each day}
12x = 108   {subtracted 50 from each side}
x = 9   {divided each side by 12}

She must wash 9 cars to reach her goal.
