Solve the system of equations.

-7 + y = (6/5)x

-9x - 5y = 40

-7 + y = (6/5)x
-9x - 5y = 40

-35 + 5y = 6x {multiplied first equation by 5}
-6x + 5y = 35 {subtracted 6x and added 35 to each side of new first equation}

-6x + 5y = 35 {new first equation}
-9x - 5y = 40 {second equation}
———————--
-15x = 75 {added the two equations}
x = -5 {divided each side by -15}

-9x - 5y = 40
-9(-5) - 5y = 40 {substituted -5, in for x, into second equation}
45 - 5y = 40 {multiplied -9 by -5}
-5y = -5 {subtracted 45 from each side}
y = 1 {divided each side by -5}

x = -5 and y = 1
