Scott is 6 years older than Rebecca. In 9 years, the sum of their ages will be 52. How old is Scott now?

Ages now
x = Rebecca’s age now
x + 6 = Scott’s age now {Scott is 6 years older than Rebecca}

Ages in 9 years
x + 9 = Rebecca’s age in 9 years
x + 15 = Scott’s age in 9 years {added 9 onto current ages}

x + 9 + x + 15 = 52 {in 9 years, the sum of their ages will be 52}
2x + 24 = 52 {combined like terms}
2x = 28 {subtracted 24 from each side}
x = 14 {divided each side by 2}
x + 6 = 20 {substituted 14, in for x, into x + 6}

Scott is 20 now
