The length of a rectangle is seven more than triple the width. If the perimeter is 174 inches, find the dimensions.

w = width
3w + 7 = length
{length is seven more than triple the width}

Perimeter of a rectangle = 2(width) + 2(length)

2w + 2(3w + 7) = 174 {substituted width and length into perimeter formula}
2w + 6w + 14 = 174 {used distributive property}
8w + 14 = 174 {combined like terms}
8w = 160 {subtracted 14 from each side}
w = 20 {divided each side by 8}
3w + 7 = 67 {substituted 20, in for w, into 3w + 7}

width = 20
length = 67
