took 4 hours. It averaged 6 km/h on the return trip. Find the average speed of the trip there.

d = rt trip there rate = r {speed there is what you are finding} time = 3 {time going took 3 hours} d = 3r {distance equals rate x time} trip back rate = 6 {rate coming back was 6 km/hr} time = 4 {time coming back was 4 hours} d = 6(4) {distance equals rate x time} d = 24 {multiplied} For the trip there and the trip back, the distances are equal. Set the distances, 3r and 24, equal to each other. 3r = 24 {set distances there and back equal to each other} r = 8 {solved for r} Remember, from above, r represents the rate of the carrier going there.
