Find the equation of the line passing through the two points

3/2/2012

Find the equation of the line, in slope-intercept form, passing through the points (2,4) and (5,13).

Find slope first.

(2,4) , (5,13)

13 - 4
-------- = slope {substituted into slope formula}
5 - 2

9
--- = slope {simplified}
3

slope = 3 {divided}

Choose one of the points and substitute in, with the slope, into point-slope formula.

(2,4) , m = 3
y - y1 = m(x - x1) {point-slope formula}
y - 4 = 3(x - 2) {substituted into point-slope formula}
y - 4 = 3x - 6 {used distributive property}
y = 3x - 2 {added 4 to both sides}
