Karlo’s father is 26 years older than Karlo. The sum of their ages five years ago is 42. How old are they now?

x = Karlo's age now
x + 26 = father's age now

x - 5 = Karlo's age five years ago {subtracted 5 from current age}
x + 21 = father's age five years ago {subtracted 5 from current age}

x - 5 + x + 21 = 42   {the sum of their ages, five years ago, was 42}
2x + 16 = 42 {combined like terms}
2x = 26 {subtracted 16 from each side}
x = 13 {divided each side by 2}
x + 26 = 39 {substituted 13, in for x, into x + 26}

Karlo is 13 now
Karlo's father is 39 now
